herself in an effort to stop the cold from seeping into her bones. It did no good. By the time Chris and Danny had moved her father to the bed and made him comfortable, her teeth chattered so loud their clicking hurt her ears.
A blanket flopped around her shoulders. Danny's warm, steady hands tucked the covering closer as he led her toward the bed. They both stared down at the man whose harsh breathing filled the silence of the room. Her father looked old. Amazement filled D.J. at the revelation. He'd always been a robust man who kept himself in shape for his job. Since he'd retired he'd let his stomach go a bit, but nothing to speak of. Years of drinking had tinted his face a ruddy red. His strawberry blond hair had thinned and the tense lines about his mouth and eyes had deepened. But until this moment D.J. had never seen her father look old and sick and pale. The sudden change made her stare without speaking.
"Talk to him, D.J." Danny's palm on her back prodded D.J. forward. "Tell him what you want him to know."
D.J. turned her face up to her childhood friend. "Can't you do something? You're a doctor, Danny. Make him better."
The doctor sighed and glanced at Chris, a helpless expression on his face. Chris looked just as helpless. Danny closed his eyes and took a deep breath; then he put his arm around her shoulders and pulled D.J. close to his side. His warmth didn't soothe her as Christian's had, but he still felt good.
